Trusty superheroes fly to rescue the summer movie season

Trusty superheroes fly to rescue the summer movie season

USA TODAY's Scott Bowles looks at 12 hopeful heroes seeking to vanquish summer flops (dates are subject to change):

Superhero: 'The Avengers' (May 4)

Origins story: Summer begins with the all-star superhero team of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and more as they battle Norse god Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his army.

Superpower: Internet frenzy. Fanboys have been drooling for this since getting a taste at last year's Comic-Con, and early reviews have prompted more screenings from Disney.

Superhero: 'Battleship' (May 18)

Origins story: A fleet of ships on Navy exercises discovers an armada of alien craft and engage in all-out battle.

Superpower: Brand-name recognition. If the movie works, it could launch a new genre: board game adaptations. Hey, they laughed at the first Pirates of the Caribbean, too.

Superhero: 'Men in Black III' (May 25)

Origins story: Agent J (Will Smith) has to go back in time to prevent an alien from assassinating his colleague and pal, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones).

Superpower: Smith and Jones. When they teamed up a decade ago for Men in Black II, the agents claimed $190 million.

Superhero: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' (June 1)

Origins story: In a break from the fairy tale, the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) is ordered to kill our heroine (Kristen Stewart) but ends up falling for her.

Superpower: Stewart. She sees only so-so success when she gets away from the goth, but this Twilight star may have found a fitting follow role.

Superhero: 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' (June 8)

Origins story: Our favorite zoo animals Alex (Ben Stiller), Marty (Chris Rock) and Melman (David Schwimmer) are still trying to make it back to New York, this time through Europe with a traveling circus.

Superpower: Pitch-perfect voices. Stiller, Rock and Schwimmer have chemistry: Their first two films in this series did a combined $374 million domestically.

Superhero: 'Prometheus' (June 8)

Origins story:Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender anchor this story of scientists who discover a key to mankind's beginning â€" and perhaps its end.

Superpower: Director Ridley Scott. The guy has already made a classic extraterrestrial film in Alien. And the trailers harken creepily to that 1979 picture.

Superhero:Rock of Ages (June 15)

Superpower: Tom Cruise. His turn as hard rocker Stacee Jaxx is drawing comparisons to his scene-stealer in 2008's Tropic Thunder as a pelvis-grinding Les Grossman.

Superhero: 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' (June 22)

Origins story: When he isn't delivering classic addresses, our 16th pres ident was hunting down Civil War-era bloodsuckers and their slave-owning allies.

Superpower: The book. Seth Grahame-Smith's 2010 novel about a president whose mother was killed by a vampire is required reading for the Comic-Con crowd.

Superhero: 'Brave' (June 22)

Origins story:Kelly Macdonald voices Princess Merida, a young archer from a mythical Scottish kingdom who unleashes evil forces she will have to face to save her homeland.

Superpower: Pixar. The animated studio can make films about culinary rodents (2007's Ratatouille) and grumpy old men (2009's Up) and still crank out movies that land at No. 1.

Superhero: 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' (June 29)

Origins story: After evil Cobra spy Zartan (Arnold Vosloo) has several Joes assassinated, the remaining members band together to destroy him.

Superpower: Dwayne Johnson. He helped muscle 2011's Fast Five to $210 million, then anchored Journey 2: The Mysterious Island to $101 million.

Superhero: 'The Amazing Spider-Man' (July 3)

Origins story:Andrew Garfield stars as the teen web-slinger, whose parents' disappearance leads him to Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), aka The Lizard.

Super power: Its origins story. The film comes just five years after Sam Raimi's trilogy, but trailers have been solid.

Superhero: 'The Dark Knight Rises' (July 20)

Origins story: After taking the fall for crimes he didn't commit, Batman (Christian Bale) resurfaces eight years later to help the Gotham police against the villainous Bane (Tom Hardy).

Superpower: Director Chris Nolan. He created what many call the best comic-book adaptation ever in 2008's The Dark Knight. His trilogy swan song has analysts projecting Rises to be the biggest film of summer, if not the year.

Superhero: Rock of Ages (June 15)

Origins story: Set in 1987 Los Angeles, Sherrie (Julianne Hough) and Drew (Diego Boneta) try to chase their big-hair musical dreams â€" and each other.

Superpower: Tom Cruise. His turn as hard rocker Stacee Jaxx is drawing comparisons to his scene-stealer in 2008's Tropic Thunder as a pelvis-grinding Les Grossman.
