Zadan, Meron plan live 'Sound of Music' for TV

Are you ready for a new Sound of Music?

NBC announced today that it is partnering with the famed producing team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Smash, Chicago, Hairspray) to present a live broadcast of The Sound of Music, based on the original Broadway musical.

"There used to be a tradition of broadcasting musicals live back in the 1950s, and we're thrilled to do it once again," says Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment, in the release.

Zadan says they are not intending to produce a "remake of the movie version of The Sound of Music - that would be artistic blasphemy."

Instead, he says, they want to give audience "a completely fresh experienc e" - the stage musical in the form of a classic television event, combined with the spontaneity of a live performance." And, he adds, "all of the actors will be singing live; there will be no lip-synching to pre-recordings."

Casting will begin immediately and an air date will be announced shortly, says NBC.
