DVD Extra: 'The Sarah Silverman Program'

DVD Extra: 'The Sarah Silverman Program'

All 32 episodes are available now on DVD in The Sarah Silverman Program: The Complete Series (2007-2010, Shout! Factory, not rated, $50).

The sitcom follows the zany antics of her and her friends in Valley Village, a community in California's San Fernando Valley. Sarah, whose immaturity and utter lack of tact make her incapable of holding a job, lives with her younger sister Laura (played by real-life older sister Laura Silverman), a registered nurse who is prone to guilt and is constantly manipulated by her sister.

Their friends include neighbors Bri an (Brian Posehn) and Steven (Steve Agee) â€" a gay couple who sport orange hair. One recurring joke is that metalhead Brian studies karate but never takes up for Steven, whom strangers just can't seem to resist punching. The show also features a broad assortment of oddball minor characters who add to the insanity.

Laura's boyfriend/husband is police officer Jay McPherson (Jay Johnston), whom she met while bailing out her sister after the cough-syrup-sipping Sarah drove into a children's sandbox. Sarah despises him and does everything she can to drive a wedge between the two.

Silverman, who did a 2005 concert film, Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic based on her one-woman show, created the crude and rude sitcom with producers Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab as a vehicle for satirizing a wide variety of topics. Silverman addresses them by putting herself in a litany of wacky situations â€" she bets that it is easier being black than Jewish and tries to prove it by becoming black for a day; she loses her keys and becomes homeless, and decides that it's not so bad; she sleeps with God; she unwittingly joins a violent anti-abortion group; she reconnects with her childhood imaginary friend, who turns out to be a very bad influence.

The show maintained strong ratings for the 2007 and 2008 seasons, but faced cancellation in 2009 over a budgetary disagreement between the network and producers. MTV Networks' Logo channel partnered with Comedy Central for the third season, which aired in 2010, before the show ended for good.

The new set comes with several bonus features, including a conversation with writers and producers, behind-the-scenes videos, the original pilot, audition videos, digital and animated shorts, and a feature on the cast and creators at 2007's Comic-Con.
