On a cold, windy, overcast day, Jenkins was dressed in a creamy, strapless mermaid-tail gown as she delivered God Save the Queen with gusto, ending on an operatic high note at the opening of the Epsom Derby.
The first of a four-day extravaganza celebrating the queen's 60 years on the throne kicked off with the horse-loving monarch's favorite activity, watching the races at the derby in Surrey.
As soon as the queen and her husband, Prince Philip, ste pped out of their Rolls on arrival at the entrance to the royal enclosure at the racetrack, they stood for the Jenkins' rendition of the anthem. Then they went inside and, according to media reports, quickly draped blankets on their laps.
There were some 130,000 racing fans at the track, many in hats and formal wear required of the royal enclosure, others in more wacky outfits. Besides her husband and other relatives, the queen was accompanied by her two younger sons, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, and two of her grandchildren, Andrew's daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
The queen was dressed in her trademark hat and coat over a dress, all in deep royal blue. She also wore a big smile. Jenkins looked pretty excited, too.
